Schalke hammer champions Inter Milan on home turf

A fast and gritty Schalke twice came from behind to snatch a resounding 5-2 win away to holders Inter Milan Tuesday in the first leg of a quarter-league match of the Champions League.
The Nerazzurri seemed to be set for a downhill ride when Dejan Stankovic gave them an early lead with a long-range volley, but Joel Matip levelled on 17 minutes and Edu set the first-half score on 2-2 after a goal from the returning Diego Milito.

Veteran Spanish star Raul put Schalke ahead before Andrea Ranocchia deflected into his own goal a low cross from Jose Jurado and Brazilian Edu scored his second goal to set a massive lead for the return match in Gelsenkirchen.

Inter's comeback on 4-2 became all but impossible when defender Cristian Chivu was sent off with a second yellow card with 28 minutes left.

Inter had a promising start before the home crowd, but suffered a second straight slip-up at the Giuseppe Meazza after the 3-0 drubbing suffered against Serie A leaders AC Milan at the weekend.

Schalke's custodian Manuel Neuer in the first minute rushed out of the box to block with a header a break from Milito, but stood no chance when Stankovic volleyed the clearance home from the midfield.

A wide header from Raul was the first signal of the German side's reaction, which brought a first goal when Cameroonian Matip was the first on the ball after Julio Cesar managed to stop a corner-kick header from Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

Milito put the hosts back in the lead on 35 minutes with a close-range flick, but Schalke again came back five minutes later with Edu, who had a first shot blocked by Julio Cesar and laid in the rebound.

A good chance missed by Milito seemed to trigger a good phase from Inter, but the Germans went ahead on 53 minutes as Raul scored after storming into the box.

Ranocchia's own goal and the following dismissal of Chivu brought Inter on their knees allowing Schalke to dominate the game, shaking the woodwork with Jurado and stretching their lead with Edu.
