Real Madrid practically in semis after thrashing 10-man Tottenham

Real Madrid are well placed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2003 after thrashing defensively feeble Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in a one-sided quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.
Emmanuel Adebayor was the two-goal hero for Real, Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo added late goals, with the "madridista" fans enjoying themselves as they have not done for many years.

Ronaldo said at the end: "We are very happy with this 4-0, it gives us a good advantage for the second leg. Anything can happen in football, but it is now very difficult for us not to go through."

When asked whether he would prefer Barcelona or Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals, the Portuguese striker refusing to make a choice, saying that "we still have to play the second leg."

Real's general director Jorge Valdano said: "It was a really good night for us. Our domination was total, the result is excellent and well deserved.

"This gives us tranquility for the second leg, but we will have to work hard and be serious over there (in White Hart Lane)."

Tottenham left the Estadio Bernabeu complaining about the rather harsh sending-off of striker Peter Crouch after just 15 minutes, a blow which Harry Redknapp's injury-hit team failed to recover from.

The hosts went ahead after just five minutes when sloppy marking allowed Adebayor to head in a corner from Mesut Oezil, which Luka Modric failed to clear off the line.

Things went from bad to worse for Spurs 10 minutes later when Crouch mindlessly earned himself a second yellow card for a late tackle on Marcelo.

Crouch's rush of blood - inexcusable in a player with so many years of top-level experience - left the visitors facing 75 minutes of high-pressure football from Real, roared on by a capacity crowd.

In the 57th minute Adebayor made it 2-0 by heading in a perfect high centre from Marcelo.

The one-way traffic continued and Di Maria scored the most handsome goal of the night 14 minutes later. The Argentine winger took a short pass from Oezil out on the right, worked the ball onto his classy left foot and made it 3-0 with a curling shot to the far post.

Ronaldo added the fourth with a near-post volley to a Kaka centre, which Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes made a mess of.

The only bad news for Real is that defender Pepe will be suspended for the return.
