ROME, May 9 (Reuters) - Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who won the Italian Open 12 months ago as an unseeded player, failed to survive the first round on Monday as she stumbled to a 6-0 5-7 6-4 defeat by Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
Sanchez, who was again unseeded, recovered from a first set whitewash to take the second set on her favourite clay surface but her respite was shortlived as she was again blown away by Makarova in the breezy conditions.
In further upsets, 11th seed and former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova fell 3-6 7-6 7-6 to unseeded Hungarian Greta Arn, while former finalist Patty Schnyder went down to Spanish qualifier Ana Medina Garrigues 6-3 6-2.
Another Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino came through against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1 0-6 7-6 to set up a second round match against fourth seed Li Na.
