St Pauli to play game behind closed doors, appeal ruling

St Pauli Hamburg were on Friday sanctioned to play their next Bundesliga home game in an empty stadium after their last match was abandoned when an assistant referee was hit by a full cup of beer thrown from the tribune. The German football federation (DFB) sports court made the ruling on Friday over the incident which occurred during the April 1 game against Schalke, following a request by the DFB control committee.

Relegation-threatened St Pauli have appealed the ruling. A hearing is expected to take place next week. The next home game is against Werder Bremen on April 23.

"We want present our view in a hearing," said St Pauli president Stefan Orth.

It would be the first time that a Bundesliga game is played behind closed doors.

Schalke were earlier in the week declared 2-0 winners by the DFB. They were leading with the same scoreline when the match was abandoned in the 87th minute.

St Pauli officials have condemned the incident but also said it was not the fault of the club. Bremen fan clubs said the ruling also punished them because their supporters could not watch the game.
