Hierro not to continue as Spanish federation's sporting director

The Spanish football federation announced on Friday that Fernando Hierro will not continue as sporting director of Spain's national teams beyond June 30, when his contract finishes. In an official statement, the federation thanked Hierro for "his great work, team spirit and professionalism...that have led to such good results."

Hierro, 43, took on the new post of sporting director in 2007. He was instrumental in bringing in Vicente del Bosque, his former coach at Real Madrid, to replace Luis Aragones as coach after the Euro 2008 triumph.
Hierro won 89 caps for Spain 1989-2002 and played in four World Cup finals.
His plans for the future are not clear. Media reports this week have hinted at a return, in some capacity, to Real Madrid, the club he played for between 1989-2003.
