Lorenzo on pole for Portuguese MotoGP

LISBON, April 30 (Reuters) - Yamaha's MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo took his first pole position of the season at the Portuguese Grand Prix on Saturday. The Spaniard, winner of the previous race before his home fans at Jerez, lapped the Estoril circuit near Lisbon with a fastest lap of one minute 37.161 seconds in the final minutes as dark clouds gathered overhead.

Italy's Marco Simoncelli, the Gresini Honda rider who dominated Friday practice, was second fastest after a late crash put paid to his pole hopes while Spaniard Dani Pedrosa completed the front row of the starting grid on another Honda.
Australian Casey Stoner, also on a Honda, was fourth while Italian Valentino Rossi will have to start in ninth place on his Ducati.
Lorenzo leads the championship after two races with 45 points to Pedrosa's 36.
