Jupp Heynckes to coach Munich again from next season on

Jupp Heynckes was on Friday appointed Bayern Munich coach for the third time in his career from next season onwards, the German Bundesliga champions said on Friday.
Munich said in a statement on their website that an agreement on a two-year contract until 2013 was reached at a meeting Thursday between Heynckes and Munich top officials led by chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
"Jupp Heynckes was our desired candidate, we are delighted that we could reach an agreement. I am convinced that we will have a successful co-operation with Jupp Heynckes," said Rummenigge.

Heynckes said: "I have been Bayern coach twice and have always liked the climate in which you work there. Of course you have to be successful as Bayern coach. But it is an attractive challenge I want to meet together with the team."

Heynckes, 65, takes the place of Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who departs on June 30 after two years in the wake of a modest season in which Bayern will win no titles. Van Gaal led Munich to a domestic league and cup double and the Champions League final in 2010.

Heynckes is currently at Bayer Leverkusen but said on Monday that he will not renew his contract beyond the season.

He coached Munich to two Bundesliga titles during his first term 1987-1991 and led them into the Champions League in a five-game stint in 2009 after the sacking of Juergen Klinsmann.

Heynckes won the World Cup as a player in 1974 and as a coach guided Real Madrid to the 1998 Champions League trophy. He spent many years in Spain as helmsman at Athletic Bilbao, Tenerife and Real, and was also in charge of Portugal's Benfica.

In Germany apart from Munich, he has coached Borussia Moenchengladbach (the club he played for), Eintracht Frankfurt, Schalke and Leverkusen.

Munich are Germany's most successful club with 22 national titles, 15 German cups, four European cups and one UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup each.

Heynckes' main task in Munich will be improving defensive stability and offensive efficiency. The back row has been their biggest weakness but a host a chances have also been missed up front.

The Bavarians decided to release Van Gaal out of his contract until 2012 after the season three weeks ago after a 3-1 defeat in Hanover.

Trailing leaders Borussia Dortmund by 14 points in fourth place, Munich's only aim for the remaining seven season games is reaching the Champions League, with second place gaining direct entry and third place a qualifying berth.

Next season's Champions League final is played in Munich in May 2012.

Munich are two points behind Hanover and seven behind current number two Leverkusen - with Heynckes facing a delicate match in Munich on April 17.

"Jupp Heynckes will do everything to get us into the Champions League and assure that Bayer finish ahead of Bayern," said Leverkusen sports director Rudi Voeller.

Munich's hiring of Heynckes is the latest chapter in an unprecedented merry-go-round of coaches in the Bundesliga which has seen 11 immediate changes and three appointments for next season.

Leverkusen have picked Freiburg's Robin Dutt as Heynckes' successor. Earlier this week, Frankfurt sacked Michael Skibbe with immediate effect and replaced him with Christoph Daum. Last week, Felix Magath had to leave Schalke and returned to Wolfsburg two days later.
