Vinicius and Tom: 2016 Olympic mascots honour Girl from Ipanema

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim, the late songwriters of the world-famous Bossa Nova classic The Girl from Ipanema, were announced Monday as namesakes for the two mascots of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The two men, who wrote the lyrics and music for a song that famously
captures the spirit of Rio, got 44 per cent of the vote, as Rio residents - so-called cariocas - favoured the songwriters over two competing pairs of names in a contest that drew more than 320,000 participants.

"Vinicius and Tom are names that are already acknowledged around the world as symbols of excellence," Rio 2016 organizing committee president Carlos Nuzman said. "Our mascots are now linked to the best of our music."

The Girl from Ipanema describes a lonely man admiring a beautiful girl on Rio's most famous beach.

The Olympic mascot, a cat-like creature, will be named Vinicius after De Moraes, a poet and Bossa Nova singer who died in 1980 at age 66.

The mascot of the Paralympics, a tree-shaped figure, will be named Tom after Jobim, a songwriter and composer who died in 1994 at age 67.
