CARMAUX, France (AP)—A brief look at Tuesday’s 10th stage of the Tour de France:

Stage: A 98-mile flat ride from Aurillac to Carmaux. An early breakaway of lower-placed riders never led the chasing peloton by more than 4 minutes. With British sprint ace Mark Cavendish’s HTC team doing much of the work, the peloton caught the escapees about 10 miles from the finish.

Green jersey holder Philippe Gilbert of Belgium attempted a spectacular solo win but the onrushing peloton chased him down, setting up a dramatic finish at line between Cavendish and former teammate Andrei Greipel of Germany.

Winner: Greipel, who stormed past Cavendish in the last 12 miles with a late burst of speed to edge out his rival and take his first Tour stage win. A massed group of 80 riders, including all the race favorites, finished with the same time.

Yellow Jersey: Thomas Voeckler of France, who spent his first day in yellow after taking the overall lead from Thor Hushovd of Norway on Sunday. Voeckler is not considered a contender for the title but leads second place Luis-Leon Sanchez by 1 minute, 49 seconds. Cadel Evans of Australia is third overall, 2:26 off the pace.

Where’s Alberto Contador? The three-time winner finished safely without losing any time to his principal rivals. Contador, who was riding with a sore right knee, said after the race he is getting back to full fitness. He is 16th overall, 4:07 behind Voeckler.

Quote of the Day: “I’ve got 33 stitches. In my knees, on the left side, the back, I’ve got them everywhere.”—Johnny Hoogerland, the Dutch rider knocked into a barbed wire fence by a reckless driver in Sunday’s stage. He finished Tuesday’s stage 5:59 seconds behind Greipel.

Next stage: Wednesday’s 104-mile stage will take riders from Blaye-les-Mines to Lavaur. The course features two minor hills but no major difficulties
