South Africa looking to bid for 2020 Olympics

PRETORIA, July 29 (Reuters) - South Africa is considering a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics and will soon discuss the matter at cabinet, Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula said on Friday.
South Africa had been seen as a leading candidate after its successful hosting of the 2010 soccer World Cup, but the government said in May it was not considering a bid because it would divert too much money from state finances.
“From the ministry of sports, we are quite interested. So we will go back to cabinet in a week’s time and represent our case to fit in the information that was not there,” Mbalula told Reuters in an interview.
“In this instance, Durban has put an important bid to us, which is convincing,” he said.
