Interview with Pablo Viola, journalist and presenter of the Fox Sports News, Argentina

The Argentinean is hurt by the past results of the national team. What is the value of the people’s need to win this Copa America?

Winning is very important to the Argentina’s national team and to the supporters. The losses in the last finals against Brazil were very difficult to take, specially the way they happened.

What is necessary for the Argentina’s coach and players to win the tournament?
I do not think we can only evaluate the team by past results. I believe a victory is very important because it will give confidence to the group. Winning will mean they can show a different face to the world of football. It depends not only on historical results, but also, and definitely for Messi to have joy when wearing the shirt of the Argentine team.

What Batista brought to the Argentine team?
It's too early to tell if Batista has added something to the team. I believe he is still working with the team, although he does not manifest it. It's hard for the Argentine football. They live with a large deficit in certain positions of half the field back and a major crisis in juveniles.

Talking about organization, what do you expect to find?
A first rate celebration. I think Argentina is just as prepared to have an organized event as the more developed countries. We have to evolve, but I trust that every detail will be taken into account, the hostess cities and in matches.

Five South American teams were into the 10 first places in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. What level of football do you expect to find?
The level will be very balanced. It is not only Brazil and Argentina. This was demonstrated at the World Cup and Qualifiers. I do not think that these teams are the ones that will get the highest yield in the field. Much depends on the moment of the players and how they arrive after a long season with their respective clubs.
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile had a good showing in South Africa, but I think Colombia is capable of resuming their former position and the rest of the teams intend to follow a similar path.

What Messi means to the Argentinean people?
There is not a unanimous admiration for him. I think Messi is a single player and needs to be acknowledged, as such. In Argentina there is no identification, because he did not play with a team from here and has not been seen in any stadium during a local league. However, with the strength of its current presentations, I believe he convinced the great majority. No player in the first level is unanimous.

Which team will be the most revelation in the tournament and what player will be in the big picture?
I think Colombia will be the big reveal. Individually their players had a great season in Europe.  I believe they  have moved beyond disappointing times, and are going to play well in South American fields, including classification for the World Cup.
