Gatlin gets major comeback chance at Oregon meeting

EUGENE, Oregon, June 1 (Reuters) - Disgraced 2004 Olympic 100 metres champion Justin Gatlin will compete in his first major race since a four-year doping ban at Saturday’s Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting, officials said on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old American, who tested positive for the banned male sex hormone testosterone in 2006, will face 2008 Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson of Trinidad and speedy Jamaicans Nesta Carter and Michael Frater in the meeting.
Gatlin regained his eligibility after the ban last July but has competed in only low-key meetings since then.
Saturday’s race will be on the same University of Oregon track where he, against long odds, will attempt in late June to make the American team for the world championships in August.
