Kirui, Kiplagat to lead Kenya marathon team at worlds

NAIROBI, July 1 (Reuters) - Kenya’s world marathon champion Abel Kirui and New York City title holder Edna Kiplagat will lead the east African nation’s marathon team at August’s world championships in South Korea, officials said on Friday.

The men’s team also includes Vincent Kipruto, the runner-up in Rotterdam, David Barmasai Tumo, winner of the Dubai Marathon, Paris Marathon title holder Benjamin Kiptoo Kolum and Eliud Kiptanui, who was fourth in Rotterdam this year.
Kiplagat is the third-ranked marathon runner in the world this year and was third in the London Marathon last April.
The other women selected are Rotterdam winner Philles Ongori, Sharon Cherop, who was third in Boston, Paris Marathon holder Prisca Jeptoo and Caroline Rotich, fourth in Boston.
The rest of Kenya’s team will be named on July 16 after the National Championships to be held in the capital Nairobi.
Most of Kenya’s top marathon runners, including London and Boston Marathon winners Emmanel Mutai and Geoffrey Mutai, former London winner Martin Lel and Boston runner-up Moses Mosop, turned down invitations to the Aug. 27-Sept. 4 worlds in Daegu.
London Marathon champion Mary Keitany, the world leader, and Lydia Cheromei, winner of the Prague Marathon and fourth fastest this year, also decided to skip the world championships.
The women’s marathon is scheduled for the opening day of the worlds while the men’s marathon will be run on the final day.
