Auckland lock Haiu begins treatment for cancer

AUCKLAND (Reuters) - Auckland Blues lock Kurtis Haiu is expected to be out of rugby for at least a year after he began chemotherapy treatment for a bone tumour on his ribs, the team's doctor said on Monday.
Haiu had been diagnosed with the tumour two weeks ago and a biopsy revealed the cancer had spread, though the prognosis looked encouraging.
"It's stage two cancer, which means it's spread just outside the bone and into the soft tissue, but nowhere else," Blues doctor Stephen Kara told reporters in Auckland.
"The specialist has quoted a 65 percent cure rate at five years," he said. "We had it down to probably four differentials and this would be the worst of those four."
Kara said the fact Haiu was young and fit would help him in the fight against the disease.
The 26-year-old Haiu was told the results of the biopsy on Friday and had started chemotherapy.
He would need three months of that treatment before he had surgery with six more months of chemotherapy to follow.
Haiu had played 53 matches for the Blues and represented New Zealand at age-grade level but has not played for the All Blacks.
