Spain has declined an invitation to play in this summer's Copa America tournament, the football federation of the world and European champions said on Wednesday.Spain was invited to
participate in the South American tournament last week when Japan, the originally invited team, pulled out because of the recent tsunami and earthquake.
The Spanish football federation said the board of directors had decided against playing "conflicts with the calendar" in a tight end-of-season schedule.
The federation added that it does not discount the possibility of playing in the Copa America in the future.
The Copa America, the world's oldest tournament for national teams, will be played in Argentina July 1-24.
