Rooney hat-trick fires United comeback

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick as Premier League leaders Manchester United came from 2-0 down to beat West Ham United 4-2 on Saturday.
Two penalties from Mark Noble gave West Ham a 2-0 half-time lead, but United battled back, and Rooney's three goals plus a late strike from Javier Hernandez gave United a
win that stretched their lead at the top of the table to eight points - having played two games more than second-placed Arsenal.
West Ham, meanwhile, slipped back into the bottom three.

United, despite resting a number of players, seemed well on top throughout the first half, dominating possession and making great inroads down the right.

But two long balls in the first half hour produced two goals for West Ham.

West Ham went ahead after 11 minutes, Noble rolling in a penalty after Patrice Evra had handled Carlton Cole's attempt to lift the ball over his head.

Cole won another penalty 13 minutes later, being pulled down by Nemanja Vidic just inside the box. This time Noble hammered his penalty, but the end result was the same.

Rob Green made a superb save to keep out a Park Ji-Sung drive, but another long ball four minutes before half-time caught United out again, and Vidic was extremely fortunate not to be sent off as he hauled down Cole again.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought on Javier Hernandez for Evra at half-time, a switch that meant Ryan Giggs moving to left-back.

Rooney, having had little impact in the first hour, pulled one back with a direct free-kick after Noble had tripped Michael Carrick just outside the box. It was his first free-kick goal since his United debut against Fenerbahce in 2004.

Dimitar Berbatov came on at the award of the free-kick, and he was in majestic form for the remainder of the game.

And with 17 minutes remaining, Rooney took Antonio Valencia's pass, went by Matthew Upson with a touch, and drilled a low finish into the bottom corner for his 100th Premier League goal for Manchester United.

Six minutes later, Upson was harshly penalised for handball as Fabbio flicked the ball back from the goal-line. The ball struck his arm, but it was by his side and it's hard to see how he could possibly have got out of the way.

Rooney sent Green the wrong way from the spot for a 3-2 lead and Hernandez touched in Giggs's cross shot with seven minutes remaining to seal the game.
