Zaheer opens World Cup with brilliant opening spell

India opening bowler Zaheer Khan dismissed Sri Lanka opener Upul Tharanga for two during a brilliant spell at the start of the World Cup final on Saturday.Zaheer bowled three maidens in a row then induced a false shot from the left-hander with the first ball of his fourth. Virender Sehwag took a tumbling catch at slip.
India's ground fielding was also outstanding to the jubilation of the
home crowd packed into the Wankhede Stadium in the expectation that their heroes will deliver the World Cup for only the second time.
Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, playing his first game since conceding 53 from five overs in the opening match of the tournament against Bangladesh, bowled a no-ball in his opening over.
He conceded two boundaries in his third over from the bat of Tillakaratne Dilshan and was replaced by Munaf Patel.
The match got away to a bizarre start with two tosses of the coin required.
Nobody seemed to hear what Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara had called after his opposite number Mahendra Singh Dhoni tossed the coin for the first time, including match referee Jeff Crowe. Crowe ordered a re-toss and Sangakkara called correctly.
Crowe was the match referee in the last World Cup final in Bridgetown, Barbados, four years ago when Australia and Sri Lanka were sent back on to the field during a rain-reduced match.
Australia were already celebrating their third final win in a row when the teams were asked to play a further three overs in near darkness even though the match had already been completed under international cricket rules. Crowe, a former New Zealand captain, later admitted he had been mistaken.
