Inter clinch home win after disastrous run

Esteban Cambiasso and Douglas Maicon were on target for Inter Milan Saturday to help them beat Chievo 2-0 and end a bad run that seems to have compromised their season in the Serie A and in Europe.
Argentine midfielder Cambiasso opened the scoring in the second-half firing from inside the box for a deflected goal to stun Sorrentino, while Maicon scored late on to secure the win at the Giuseppe Meazza.

With six games left, the Serie A champions moved within two points of leaders AC Milan, who beat them 3-0 last weekend and close the weekend late Sunday at Fiorentina.

Inter took another bad blow in mid-week with a 5-2 home hammering from German side Schalke, which virtually eliminated them from the Champions League they won last year.

Inter's top striker Samuel Eto'o stayed rooted on 19 goals as he lacked precision in two first-half effort, while Giampaolo Pazzini missed a great chance when he fired after Maicon set him up before Stefano Sorrentino.

Chievo played well in the first half and came close when Davide Moscardelli fired wide after dispossessing an uncertain Andrea Ranocchia, but failed to bounce back after falling behind on 65 minutes.

Veteran striker Sergio Pellissier had two good chances for the visitors inside the box but nodded the first high and grossly misfired off an inviting feed before Maicon secured the hosts' win with six minutes left.

A break from striker Diego Milito, who came on after the interval, was blocked by the defence, but the ball rolled into the feet of the Brazil defender for a close-range flick past Sorrentino.

Chasers Napoli can leapfrog Inter in second place when they visit Bologna Sunday with a three-point gap from the top.

Fourth-place Udinese look to retain the last available Champions League berth when they welcome Roma later Saturday.
