Dortmund snatch late point, Robben off as Bayern slip

Leaders Borussia Dortmund grabbed a stoppage-time equalizer for a 1-1 draw at SV Hamburg Saturday but offered a glimpse of hope for Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen in second place. The point takes Dortmund eight points clear at the top, but Leverkusen could move to within five points if they beat lowly visitors St Pauli on Sunday

Meanwhile Bayern Munich lost ground in the fight for Champions League qualification when they were pegged 1-1 at Nuremberg - losing Arjen Robben to a red card at the end of the game - to be overtaken in third place by Hanover who downed Mainz 2-0.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a first-half penalty for SV Hamburg but Dortmund battled back for a deserved point when Jakub Blaszczykowski volleyed in an equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time.

Dortmund's Mats Hummels escaped without a red or yellow card after he brought down Mladen Petric in the area, although the central defender was last man, for Hamburg's penalty.

Dutch striker Van Nistelrooy kept his cool to plant the ball in the corner past keeper Roman Weidenfeller in the 39th minute.

Dortmund came close to equalizing several times, twice hitting the upright, and piled on the pressure after Hamburg's Anis Ben-Hatira was sent off following a second booking in the 78th minute.

They were rewarded when a cross from Marcel Schmelzer on the left was headed on by Patrick Owomoyela to be blasted in at the far post by fellow substitute Blaszczykowski.

"We kept fighting for the equalizer," said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp.

"We put a lot of pressure on in the second half not just when Hamburg were down to 10 men. We created chances almost by the minute. Our goal was entirely deserved and it is only right that we are not leaving here empty-handed."

Thomas Mueller gave Bayern an early goal at Nuremberg but the home side levelled on the hour when Christian Eigler took advantage of a mistake by Thomas Kraft.

The keeper came out of the right side area and tried to chip the ball clear, only for Eigler to intercept and hit the ball first-time from 25 metres out into an empty goal.

A disappointing game for Bayern ended when Dutch winger Robben was shown a red card for insulting the referee after the final whistle. He will now miss next Sunday's crucial match at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

"The red card is the worst, said Robben. "It means I won't be playing next week against Leverkusen. That's a great shame. I apologize to the fans and my team-mates."

Unlike the Hamburg penalty incident, the last-man rule was interpreted differently in Hanover and Freiburg where defenders were shown red cards for fouls in the box.

Hanover's Didier Ya Konan scored from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time after Mainz defender Nikolce Noveski was sent off for bringing down Lars Stindl in the area.

Sergio Pinto rifled in a second in the 59th minute to make sure of the points for coach Mirko Slomka's side who move to 53 points, one above Bayern but five adrift of Leverkusen.

Freiburg's Pavel Krmas was sent off for a foul in the area but the 10-man home side came from 2-1 down for a 3-2 defeat of Hoffenheim.

Freiburg took the lead with a goal direct from a corner by Julian Schuster, but Vedad Ibisevic levelled from the penalty spot after the foul by Krmas.

Ryan Babel scored his first goal since his move from Liverpool in the winter break to put Hoffenheim ahead three minutes before the interval.

Papiss Demba Cisse levelled from the spot on the hour for his 20th goal of the season to become the Bundesliga's leading scorer, and Heiko Butscher headed the winner side 12 minutes from time.

There was no joy for coach Felix Magath on his return to Schalke 04 with struggling Wolfsburg, where the home side snatched a 1-0 victory thanks to a 76th-minute goal from Jose Manuel Jurado.

Wolfsburg stay third last, level on 28 points with St Pauli.

"We worked well at the back but we played too cautiously," Magath said. "This game gives me cause for reflection because I had expected more initiative, but a team near the bottom lacks self-confidence."

Srdjan Lakic headed two goals as Kaiserslautern earned a 4-2 win at VfB Stuttgart. The result moves Kaiserslautern out of immediate relegation danger, while Stuttgart remain within two points of the drop zone.

Eintracht Frankfurt and fellow strugglers Werder Bremen shared the points in a 1-1 draw Friday evening.
