Concern grows over Brazilian airports ahead of 2014 World Cup

Most of Brazil's airports are unlikely to be ready in time for the 2014 World Cup in the country, an expert report said Thursday. The report, drafted by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA, which has ties to the Brazilian Planning Ministry,) said that of 13 airports to be revamped for the World Cup only four stand a chance of meeting the deadline.

"A worrying situation has been detected" in nine of these airports, in Manaos, Fortaleza, Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Cuiaba, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Campinas, the report said.

It also detected a short-term risk of collapse in Brazil's airport system, partly due to a lack in investment over the past 20 years, but also due to an increase in demand based on the growth of the Brazilian economy and on social programmes that brought millions out of poverty.

Airport reform is regarded by many as the main challenge for Brazil ahead of the 2014 football World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, set to be held in Rio de Janeiro.

World Cup organizing committee president Ricardo Teixeira, when asked about the country's main problems ahead of the event, was clear enough.

"First, airports; second, airports; and third, airports," he said in July.
