AC Milan eye title after narrow win over minnows Brescia

AC Milan moved close to the Serie A title Saturday with a 1-0 edging of beleaguered hosts Brescia that pushed them eight points clear of Inter Milan with four games left. The Rossoneri squandered plenty of chances with strikers Antonio Cassano and Brazilian Robinho as they stood in for the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the injured Pato.

Robinho finished off a counter-attack as Cassano set him up with seven minutes left, just after a free kick from Alessandro Diamanti shook the Devils' woodwork.

Inter in earlier action rallied to clinch a 2-1 win over Lazio and moved into second place past Napoli, who were stunned 2-1 at Palermo and remained nine points from Milan.

The home game of title holders Inter took a bad turn when their Brazilian custodian, Julio Cesar, was dismissed for flooring Mauro Zarate with a last-man foul.

The same Argentine forward rose to convert the resultant penalty on 24 minutes past Luca Castellazzi, who replaced Julio Cesar as striker Diego Milito took place on Inter's bench.

Dutchman Wesley Sneijder prompted the Nerazzurri's comeback, forcing a save from Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and beating him on 40 minutes with a swerving free kick under the bar.

A slip-up from defender Giuseppe Biava favoured a deadly break from Camerooonian star Samuel Eto'o, who completed the hosts' rally on 53 minutes as he leapt past Muslera.

Lazio's comeback efforts lost steam on 65 minutes with the dismissal of captain Stefano Mauri for kicking Japanese midfielder Yuto Nagatomo.

Libor Kozak came on upfront for Sergio Floccari and shook the Nerazzurri's woodwork as the game kept a brisk pace despite the two red cards.

The Rome side remained in fourth place, holding a one-pont lead from Udinese, who had Gokhan Inler dismissed as lowly Parma beat them 2-0 with a brace from Amauri.

Napoli took an early lead in Palermo with Uruguay ace Edinson Cavani converting a spot kick after Mattia Cassani handled the ball.

The striker moved level on 26 goals with Udinese's Antonio Di Natale, but the Sicily hosts bounced back with a volley from defender Federico Balzaretti and a spot kick converted by Cesare Bovo after the pause.

Fiorentina won 2-1 at Cagliari, Cesena improved their lowly standing with a 2-0 win at Bologna, Genoa beat 4-2 troubled Lecce and Sampdoria won 1-0 at relegated tail-enders Bari.

Juventus close late Saturday at lowly Catania a round that Roma opened with a 1-0 edging of Chievo.

Roma strengthened their sixth place which would see them enter next season's Europa League. The Giallorossi are four points behind the four-team Champions League zone.
