Rome (AFP) - Veteran Czech coach Zdenek Zeman has been sacked by Cagliari, the Serie A strugglers announced on Tuesday.
A 3-1 defeat at home to champions and league leaders Juventus
last Thursday left the Sardinians in the relegation zone going into Christmas.
They have won just twice in 16 games and lie three points from safety.
Italian media reports suggest that the favourite to take over from Zeman is Gianfranco Zola, the former Italy international who was born in Sardinia and played for the club at the end of his career.
Former Italy goalkeeper Walter Zenga has also been linked to the position.
Renowned for his attacking style of football, Zeman, 67, returned to management in the summer, more than a year after being sacked by Roma.
He oversaw remarkable wins away to Inter (4-1) and Empoli (4-0) but leaves after Cagliari failed to win any of their last eight Serie A games of 2014.
