Nine people arrested in Malaysia, Vietnam fan melee

Kuala Lumpur (dpa) - Nine people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in attack against Vietnamese fans during a tense first leg of the AFF Cup semi-final between Malaysia and Vietnam last weekend, a senior police official said Friday.

The suspects were arrested in separate raids
overnight in several Malaysian states, according to Selangor state police criminal investigation chief Mohamad Adnan Abdullah.

"We arrested five in Johor, two in Selangor and two in Kuala Lumpur," he said in a press briefing. "They will be detained until Monday and if necessary, we will ask for extension of their remand period.

Mohamad Adnan said police are still looking for six more people who may also have been involved in the violence late Sunday at the Shah Alam football stadium outside Kuala Lumpur where Malaysia lost 2-1 to Vietnam.

Malaysia on Thursday won the return match against Vietnam 4-2 in a violence-free game in Hanoi to reach the final against Thailand, who crushed the Philippines 3-0 in the other semi after a goalless first leg.

A photo on the Facebook page of Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin showed a Vietnamese fan bleeding after an apparent attack by a few Malaysian football fans.

Khairy apologized to the Vietnamese football fans for the violence and urged the police to bring those behind the attack to justice.
