Inter Milan end bad run with win at Chievo

Rome (dpa) - Inter Milan won 2-0 on Monday at 10-man Chievo with Mateo Kovacic and captain Andrea Ranocchia on target to help the Nerazzurri steer clear of trouble in the Italian Serie A.

The Nerazzurri resumed winning after three defeats and two draws
, climbing to 11th place on 20 points from 15 games. Chievo were unbeaten in the last five games and stayed on 13 points, one above the three-team drop zone.

Offensive midfielder Kovacic pounced in a static defence to open the scoring on 19 minutes, and Ranocchia deflected home a cross from Danilo D'Ambrosio on 55.

The hosts came close to levelling before half-time, when Samir Handanovic parried a great overhead kick by Riccardo Meggiorini, but lost hope after the dismissal of substitute Ruben Botta on 72.

Promoted Empoli and Torino played out a 0-0 draw earlier Monday to remain close to the lower reaches.

After two wins and two draws, Empoli failed to prevail despite creating good chances at the rainy Carlo Castellani stadium, where Torino's Swedish defender Pontus Jansson was sent off with a second booking on 90 minutes.

The Tuscany side moved onto 16 points as Torino sit on 14 alongside Atalanta.

Leaders Juventus drew 1-1 on Sunday at home to Sampdoria for a point tally of 36 and saw Roma close within one point as they won 1-0 at Genoa.
