Hirscher clinches slalom to top World Cup standings

Are, Sweden (dpa) - Reigning three-time overall champion Marcel Hirscher captured the men's World Cup slalom in Are, Sweden, Sunday to go top of the standings.

Hirscher got the better of Felix Neureuther on the second run to beat the German by 0.10 seconds, with Alexander Khoroshilov third 0.15 seconds adrift.

It was the third World Cup win this season and the 26th career victory
for Hirscher who Friday triumphed in the men's giant slalom in Are.

"I am super happy. It was the perfect weekend. Let's hope it continues," he said in first television interviews.

Hirscher posted a combined time of 1 minute 40.37 seconds for the two runs, after trailing Neureuther by 0.25 seconds on the first leg.

"Second place is of course super but if you are leading after the first run you want to win," Neureuther said.

"In the second run I was not quite as relaxed as in the first. When you are so close to Marcel you want to beat him, but it was still a great day."

Ted Ligety of the United States, lying third after the first run, and Austria's Mario Matt, lying fourth, both failed to finish the second leg.

Hirscher's win puts him top of the overall standings on 440 points, 28 ahead of Kjetil Jansrud of Norway, with Ligety on 246.

He also draws level with legendary compatriot Franz Klammer and Croatia's Ivica Kostelic in joint 10th place in the all-time winners' list, led by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden on 86.

After two slalom races this season, Hirscher tops the discipline's standings on 180 points, with Neureuther on 140 and Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway on 100.

The men's World Cup continues with a super-g Friday and a downhill Saturday in Val Gardena, Italy, followed by a giant slalom Sunday in Alta Badia, Italy.
