Trophy Tour proves a hit in Donetsk

"Now I hope the Henri Delaunay Cup stays in Ukraine after UEFA EURO 2012," said Donetsk mayor Oleksandr Lukyanchenko as the Follow the Trophy Tour ended its stay in the city.

The UEFA EURO 2012 Follow the Trophy tour made a successful three-day visit to the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, venue for five matches at next month's final tournament.

Viktor Grachov, FC Shakhtar Donetsk legend and Friend of EURO, presented the trophy to children from 12 Donetsk schools. "I wish you could see their emotions; I was
overwhelmed as well," he said. "It is a great honour for me to present this trophy to this great city. I feel that I played football for a good reason now that I have had a chance to hold this cup in my own hands."

The next stop for the Henri Delaunay Cup was a conference hall at the Hotel Shakhtar Plaza, where it was unveiled to the local press and political dignitaries. Mayor Oleksandr Lukyanchenko reported that Donetsk needed only to add the finishing touches to its preparations for the tournament, voicing his confidence that the three group stage games, quarter-final and semi-final taking place in the city would be staged to the highest of standards. "Now I have only one wish – that the Henri Delaunay Cup stays in Ukraine even after UEFA EURO 2012," he added.

The iconic piece of silverware then travelled in a special transparent box on a car's roof through the city to the Donetsk regional hospital. Children there had a chance to pose for photos with the famous trophy and EURO mascots Slavek and Slavko. The next stop was Donetsk's Lenin Square, where hundreds of people were waiting for the trophy despite the cold, windy weather.

Mascots Slavek and Slavko appeared first and were immediately surrounded by excited youngsters. Lukyanchenko and Grachov soon joined them and handed children from Donetsk orphanages a huge cake with an imitation trophy on top. Thousands of people were photographed with the cup at the square which hosted other activities for the crowd, including freestyle football juggling and mini-pitch matches.

Next stop: Lviv
The roadshow will remain in Ukraine, beginning a three-day stay in Lviv from 23 May. The tour set out from Warsaw on 20 April and the trophy will visit a total of 14 cities across the two UEFA EURO 2012 co-host countries before finishing at Odesa on 26 May.
