CLEVELAND (AP) Chris Perez believes it is time Cleveland fans start supporting the first-place Indians.
The All-Star closer didn't back down Sunday from comments he made after earning his 13th save Saturday by striking out the side on 10 pitches to clinch a 2-0 win over the Miami Marlins.
Perez is frustrated by Cleveland ranking last in attendance despite leading the AL Central with a 23-17 record entering Sunday. Being booed on top of it led to his outburst, which didn't sit well with management.
Team president Mark Shapiro said the organization disagrees with the way Perez commented, adding that he and the Indians respect the fan support. Shapiro believes the outspoken right-hander's words come from a desire to win and get more fans to come to the ballpark.
