CUGNAUX, France (AP)—Frenchman Thomas Voeckler had the overall lead in the Tour de France as riders hit the massive climbs of the Pyrenees for the first time in the 12th stage.
The 131.1-mile trek from Cugnaux to Luz-Ardiden features two famed and feared ascents up Col du Tourmalet and Luz-Ardiden. They’re known as Hors Categorie climbs, or HC—so tough they don’t have a classification.
Defending champion Alberto Contador might look to cut some of his time deficit behind rivals Cadel Evans and Andy Schleck. The Spaniard was 1 minute, 30 seconds adrift of Schleck, and 1:41 behind Evans.
Two more grueling Pyrenean stages follow Friday and Saturday.
