CAMPANA, Argentina (AP)—Brazil defensive midfielder Sandro has been released from Brazil’s Copa America squad because of a knee injury.
Brazilian doctor Rodrigo Lasmar announced Tuesday that Sandro left Monday’s practice complaining of pain. Tests later showed he will need surgery on his left knee meniscus.
The Tottenham player also complained of muscle pain in both legs. He is expected to be sidelined for about a month after the surgery.
Sandro says he is “very sad” to be leaving the team in a “such an important moment” in his career. He said the timing of the injury was “really unfortunate.”
Defending champion Brazil faces Ecuador in its final group match on Wednesday needing to win or draw to advance.
