Russia takes bronze in women’s world water polo

SHANGHAI (AP)—Olga Belyaeva scored three times for Russia, which built a five-goal lead and then held on to beat Italy 8-7 on Friday in the bronze medal match in women’s water polo at the world aquatic championships.
Italy outscored the Russians 6-2 in the third period before the teams played to a scoreless fourth.
China was to play Greece in the gold medal match later Friday.
Earlier Friday, Australia beat the two-time defending champion United States 10-5 for fifth place, and the Netherlands defeated Canada 8-7 to take seventh place in the 16-team competition.
Serbia will face Italy in the men’s gold medal match on Saturday. Hungary will take on Croatia for bronze.
