Ubaldo Jimenez(notes) continues to insist that trade rumors surrounding him won’t impact him on the mound.
Reports are heating up that numerous teams are interested in Jimenez (6-9, 4.20 ERA), signed for the next three years at just under $18 million. He has said that he wants to stay with Colorado (50-56).“The other teams are trying to get better, but at the same time this team is trying to get talent,” Jimenez told the Rockies’ official website. “They’re not wanting us to show up at the stadium and say, ‘We’re going to lose today.’ That’s the way I’m looking at it. I keep showing up every day and playing hard. We’ll see what happens.”
Jimenez allowed two runs over seven innings in a 2-0 loss at San Diego (46-61) on June 7. He had been 5-0 with a 3.27 ERA over his previous five outings versus the Padres.
The right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.18 ERA in a three-start span before yielding five runs over five innings in Sunday’s 7-0 loss at Arizona.
He’ll be opposed by Aaron Harang(notes) (9-2, 3.45), who is 5-0 with a 2.99 ERA in 11 starts since his last loss May 2 against Pittsburgh. Harang, seeking to win 10 games for the first time since 2007, is 5-2 with a 2.92 ERA in 10 home outings.
The veteran right-hander enters off consecutive road victories. He notched Monday’s 5-4 victory at Philadelphia by allowing four runs in six innings.
Harang is 4-2 with a 4.73 ERA in eight starts against Colorado, giving up seven runs over 4 1-3 innings in a 9-7 win at Coors Field on May 14.
This is the second time Jimenez and Harang have opposed each other. Jimenez gave up four runs over six innings for the win while Harang lasted 2 1-3 and yielded four runs and did not get a decision in Colorado’s 10-5 win over Cincinnati last Sept. 6.
Ty Wigginton(notes) is 6 for 12 with two homers against Harang in his career, and the San Diego native sat out Friday’s 3-2 win in the series opener. Wigginton is another Rockie rumored to be the subject of trades.
Colorado has gone without a homer in five straight games, and hasn’t failed to go deep in six in a row since Aug. 17-22, 2010.
The Padres have lost three straight to the Rockies, who own a 6-4 lead in the season series. San Diego has totaled 16 runs over the last seven matchups after scoring 24 in a three-game set in Denver from May 13-15.
San Diego RBI leader Ryan Ludwick(notes) was 1 for 4 on Friday, and is 2 for 25 with one RBI in seven home games since the All-Star break.
“I don’t think he is pressing,” manager Bud Black said. “He’s taking good rips, the results aren’t there. He has to get to the point where his timing is a bit more precise.”
Will Venable(notes) (back spasms) and Jason Bartlett(notes) (tight right hamstring) were scratched from Black’s lineup Friday.
