SYDNEY, July 15 (Reuters) - The Wallabies squad will take home A$110,000 ($118,046) a man if they win the World Cup later this year but no bonus at all if they fail to reach the final in New Zealand.
The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said the players had agreed to reduce match fees in order to maximise their bonus if they were to secure a third World Cup triumph for their country at the Sept. 9 to Oct. 23 tournament.
“We believe this agreement gives the players an opportunity to be well and deservedly rewarded if they achieve the ultimate and return from New Zealand as Rugby World Cup champions,” ARU chief John O’Neill said in a news release.
“Winning the rugby World Cup would have enormous flow on benefits for the game in this country, so it is only fair the players have an opportunity to receive a tangible benefit if they reach the highest achievement level our game offers.
“ARU also acknowledges that this exciting group of players is prepared to back itself and reduce match payments to maximise their incentives should they win the tournament.”
The players will receive $10,000 per pool match and $11,000 for each game they play in the knockout stages. A bonus of $25,000 will be paid if they reach the final with an extra $85,000 kicking in if they bring home the Webb Ellis trophy.
