TORONTO, July 3 (Reuters) - Alex Rodriguez(notes) of the New York Yankees was named to his 13th Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star team while Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista(notes) will be a first-time starter after the lineups for the Mid-Summer Classic were unveiled on Sunday.
Bautista, who was crowned the major league’s home run king last year and leads the league in homers this season with 26, attracted the most votes with a record 7,454,753 fan ballots, surpassing the previous mark of 6,069,688 cast in 1994 for Seattle Mariners Ken Griffey Jr.(notes)
The 30-year old Dominican has recorded the most home runs (91) in the Majors since the 2009 All-Star break and is the first Blue Jay to finish as the top overall vote-getter.
Rodriguez will be joined by three of his Yankees team mates on the American League starting lineup with second baseman Robinson Cano(notes), shortstop Derek Jeter(notes) and outfielder Curtis Granderson(notes) all making the trip to Phoenix for the July 12 showcase.
It will be the 12th All-Star appearance and seventh start for Jeter who is recovering from an injured calf in the minors and needs six hits to become the 28th player to reach 3,000 career hits.
Other AL starters include Boston Red Sox third baseman Adrian Gonzalez(notes), Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila(notes), Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes) and Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz(notes).
The Milwaukee Brewers had three players voted to the National League starting lineup, including first baseman Prince Fielder(notes), second baseman Rickie Weeks(notes) and the NL’s top vote-getter outfielder Ryan Braun(notes).
Braun becomes the first NL outfielder to make four consecutive fan-elected starts since Barry Bonds was elected to start five from 2000-2004.
Rounding out the NL lineup are New York Mets third baseman Jose Reyes(notes), Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Placido Polanco(notes), Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann(notes), the 2010 All-Star Game most valuable player, and outfielders Lance Berkman(notes) of the St. Louis Cardinals and Matt Kemp(notes) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
