Police dismiss case against Athletics Australia head

MELBOURNE, July 18 (Reuters) - State police have dismissed a complaint made by runner John Steffensen against Athletics Australia (AA) president Rob Fildes as “unsubstantiated”, the governing body said on Monday.
The former Commonwealth Games gold medallist had lodged a police complaint over an allegation that Fildes had grabbed him by the shoulder before the 400m medals presentation at the national championships at Melbourne’s Olympic Park.
“We have been informed that, in the opinion of officers at Richmond Police Station, Fildes has no case to answer,” AA said in a statement.
“In their opinion, the matter is now closed.”
Steffensen has had a rocky relationship with AA and boycotted last year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi as a protest against what he saw as the organisation’s ill-treatment of athletes.
