Lawes hurts neck in England training match

LONDON (AP)—Courtney Lawes has given England a pre-World Cup scare when he was taken to hospital after hurting his neck in an inter-squad trial match.
England says the 22-year-old lock was given the all-clear after a precautionary X-ray. He was discharged and will be assessed by medical staff this weekend.
Injury permitting, Lawes will be one of England’s starting second-rowers at the World Cup in New Zealand, which begins Sept. 9.
Winger David Strettle was also carried off with what appeared to be a leg injury during Thursday’s behind-closed-doors match at Twickenham Stoop Stadium, the home of English club Harlequins.
England coach Martin Johnson, who names his 30-man squad on Aug. 22, says “inevitably it was competitive and you wouldn’t have it any other way.”
