Jeter set to resume 3,000 hits chase next week

TAMPA BAY, Florida , June 30 (Reuters) - New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter is set to resume his pursuit of 3,000 hits when he returns from a calf injury that has kept him sidelined for two weeks on Monday.

Six hits shy of becoming the 28th Major League player to reach the milestone, Jeter said on Thursday that he was prepared to come off the disabled list and rejoin the Yankees lineup for the first time since June 14.
The shortstop will test his fitness in two minor leagues games over the weekend and if he comes through unscathed, the 37-year-old is expected to join the Yankees in Cleveland on Monday for their three-game series against the Indians.
“I feel a lot better,” Jeter told the team’s website (newyork.yankees.mlb.com) after taking part in an intense workout of hitting and running the bases in Tampa Bay.
“I had never (hurt the calf) before, so I didn’t know what to expect. In the beginning, I was a little hesitant to do anything. But once you get over that, it’s just getting in baseball shape.”
Jeter, batting .260 this season, is looking to become the first player to reach the 3,000 hit mark while playing for the Yankees.
Peter Rose (4,256) holds the Major League Baseball record for hits.
