STOCKHOLM, July 9 (Reuters) - Slovenia’s Polona Hercog beat local favourite Johanna Larsson in straight sets to claim her first-ever WTA title at the Swedish Open in Bastad on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, 53 in the world rankings, exploited the Swede’s shaky backhand to win 6-4 7-5.
Despite some erratic play Larsson made a late charge in the second set, breaking Hercog to draw level at 5-5 only to be broken back in the next game.
Eighth seed Hercog then served for the match, dropping just a point in the final game as she claimed the title.
“It’s tough,” a disappointed Larsson told Sweden’s TV 4.
“I should have at least gotten it to a tiebreak in the second set.”
Both players were seeking their first victory in their second WTA final.
