Gilbert wins opening stage of 2011 Tour de France

Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert claimed victory in the first stage of the 98th Tour de France Saturday to take the leader's yellow jersey.

Gilbert pulled away from his rivals on the uphill finish of the 191.5-kilometre stage from Passage du Gois to Mont des Alouettes to win in a time of 4 hours, 41 minutes, 31 seconds and register the first Tour stage win of his career.

Cadel Evans of Australia secured second place ahead of Norway's Thor Hushovd.

A three-man group consisting of Jeremy Roy, Perrig Quemeneur and Lieuwe Westra broke away for more than 170km but were hauled in by the peloton 20km from the finish.

There was also a mass pile-up eight kilometres from the finish when a rider hit a cameraman. The accident also affected defending champion and race favourite Alberto Contador, who came home 1 minute, 21 seconds behind Gilbert.
