DETROIT, July 2 (Reuters) - The San Francisco Giants looked every bit like the defending World Series champions as they pounded the Detroit Tigers 15-3 at a rain-soaked Comerica Park Saturday.
First inning home runs by Pablo Sandoval(notes) and Brandon Crawford(notes) propelled the Giants to an early 5-0 lead.
The visitors then added another run and had two men on in the third inning when the skies opened and rain delayed the game for two hours and 36 minutes.
The rain did not dampen the Giants offense when play finally resumed, however, as Brandon Crawford walked to load the bases and Miguel Tejada(notes) hit a grand slam homer to extend the lead to 10-0.
Giants starter Barry Zito(notes) also remained sharp through the lengthy delay and pitched six shutout innings, while allowing just five hits and two walks.
“You’ve got the three days’ rest, you’ve got the long rain delay and a tough (Detroit) lineup… to keep his focus, what a job he did,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters of Zito’s performance.
Tigers starter Max Scherzer(notes), making a third attempt to win his 10th game of the season, dropped to 9-4 after he allowed nine runs on six hits and three walks before exiting with no men out in the third inning.
“I’m disappointed in the starting pitching three of the last five games,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.
“Not mad at anybody. I don’t get as excited as a lot of people get about it, but that’s not acceptable.”
The Giants continued their offensive onslaught, scoring two more runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to extend the lead to 15-0.
Detroit’s Jhonny Peralta(notes) and Brennan Boesch(notes) hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to break the shutout, and Boesch scored again in the ninth inning.
