GENEVA (AFP) - Football's governing body FIFA on Thursday lifted its suspension on the Football Federation of Belize, allowing the country to play the
return leg of a 2014 World Cup qualifying tie.
"The FIFA Emergency Committee has decided today, 7 July 2011, to provisionally lift until 15 August the suspension of the Football Federation of Belize, which had been imposed on 17 June," said FIFA in a statement.
"This decision has been taken following some positive developments in the case," added FIFA, without giving further details.
FIFA had suspended the federation after Belize's government said it was not authorised to represent the country in any local or international competition.
The suspension had meant that the return leg of the qualifying tie for the 2014 World Cup, due to be played in Belize on June 19 between the home team and Montserrat, was been postponed.
The first game, played in Trinidad, was won 5-2 by Belize.
Despite reinstating the federation, FIFA said the match would now be played outside Belize, "in order to avoid the risk of the Belizean authorities not providing security guarantees, as was the case for the game originally scheduled for 19 June 2011."
It also warned that if the Belize federation is unable to settle its differences with the government by mid-August, it would once again be subjected to a ban.
