Factbox on Juergen Klinsmann

July 29 ,(Reuters) - Former Germany World Cup winner and manager Juergen Klinsmann was named coach of the United States men’s national team on Friday. The following is an outline of his career.
Born: July 30, 1964 in Goeppingen, Germany.
PLAYING CAREER
* Displayed early signs that he would be a top-notch striker when, as a nine-year-old playing for his hometown TB Gingen, he scored 106 goals in one season.
* Signed his first professional contract at 16 and made his debut at 17 for the second division Stuttgarter Kickers.
* Joined Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart in 1984 and made his German under-21 national debut. In 1988 was the top-scorer in the Bundesliga and was voted German Footballer of the Year.
* Made his national team debut in 1987 against Brazil before going on to help Germany win the bronze medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea and the World Cup in 1990, when he showed brilliant form throughout the tournament.
* Moved to Italy’s Inter Milan in 1989 and won the UEFA Cup with them in 1991.
* Played for AS Monaco from 1992-1994 then signed with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for the 1994-1995 season, scoring 21 goals and being named the England Footballer of the Year.
* For the 1995-1996 and 1996-1997 seasons, Klinsmann returned to Germany to play for Bayern Munich, leading the club to the UEFA Cup in 1996 and a Bundesliga title in 1997.
* After stints with Italy’s Sampdoria and Tottenham for a second time, Klinsmann retired as a professional after the 1998 World Cup.
* In 17 seasons, he scored 226 goals in 506 club matches.
* He played for Germany 108 times, scoring 47 goals and representing his country in three World Cups (1990, 1994 and 1998).
* Was voted German Footballer of the Year in 1988 and 1994 and was team captain of Germany from 1994 to 1998.
COACHING CAREER
* Took over as head coach of the German national team in 2004 and guided them to the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup hosted by his home country. Stepped down after the World Cup with a record of 20 wins, eight draws and six losses.
* In 2008, he accepted the job as head coach of Bayern Munich but did not last the season when he was replaced with five matches to play due to a difference of opinion with the club’s board of directors.
* Klinsmann currently lives in California where he is a partner in SoccerSolutions, a sports marketing consultancy firm that specialises in marketing, strategic planning and brand and business development related to soccer.
