EPL eyes back-to-back pre-season events

HONG KONG (AFP) - The Premier League is considering holding back-to-back pre-season football tournaments on two continents, chief executive Richard Scudamore said on Saturday.
Overcrowding in the football calendar is a perennial complaint among players and managers, but clubs have proven keen to exploit their commercial appeal around the world before the start of the league campaign.
Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa have all played in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong this week, and Scudamore said it may be possible to organise consecutive events in July.
"Will we be thinking about more than one continent with more than one tournament at a time? There are two weekends where you can get a tournament of this kind off," Scudamore said. "Can my people organise that without falling over? Probably, yes."
The head of the Hong Kong Football Association had suggested the Barclays Asia Trophy could move to the United States but Scudamore confirmed the event would return to Asia in two years' time.
North America would be highly likely as a destination for a second tournament, with last year's Champions League finalists Manchester United and Barcelona currently touring there.
