FRANKFURT, Germany (AFP) - Title contenders Brazil will look to avoid a slip-up in their final Group D match of the 2011 Women's World Cup against pointless Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday.
Brazil have already locked up first place in the group with six points and victories over both Norway and Australia - who square off in the other group match. And the Brazilians will take on either Sweden or the United States in the quarter-finals.
The South American giants - on the hunt for their first world title after losing to Germany in the 2007 final - have yet to concede a goal through two games. Only three other nations could claim that going into the final group matches - France, the United States and Sweden.
Brazil midfielder Formiga said the team cannot overestimate the Cup debutants from Africa.
"It's been a long road, we can't rest and can't let up. We have to continue working hard, like we came here to do, and trusting that we can continue eliminating our rivals," said Formiga, appearing at her fifth World Cup.
"We're a close team. We have spent a long time working hard and our objective is to be world champions for the first time."
Equatorial Guinea will be looking for their first World Cup point after a 1-0 loss to Norway and 3-2 defeat at the hands of Australia. And despite meeting for the first time in World Cup play, many of Brazilian and Equatorial Guinean players know each other.
Many of the Equatorial Guinea players are nationalised Brazilians or play in the Brazilian football league. And Guinea coach Marcello Frigerio is an Italian-Brazilian who learned the game in the Brazilian academies - including using a sweeper, something only his team and Brazil have in the game.
Frigerio plans on using that connection to push his players.
"I'm Brazilian and know the Brazil team very well. I'll try to motivate my players to represent the country as best they can," said the head coach.
Equatorial Guinea would like to finish their first World Cup on a high note - even though that will be difficult.
"It is going to be a very difficult match no doubt about that. It's very difficult," said Frigerio.
"It's our first experience in the World Cup. Our country ranks very low so we have to leave a good impression. We lost 1-0 to Norway and then had a close defeat to Australia: this is something that we can be really satisfied with."
