TORONTO (AP)—Edwin Encarnacion(notes) and Eric Thames(notes) had three hits and three RBIs each and Toronto used an eight-run first inning to beat New York 16-7 on Thursday night.
The Blue Jays set season highs in runs and hits (20) to win their fourth straight game.
Toronto lost slugger Jose Bautista(notes) to a twisted right ankle in the fourth inning. Bautista, who leads the majors with 31 home runs, limped off after an awkward slide into third base. He is day-to-day.
Andruw Jones(notes) hit two home runs but the Yankees couldn’t extend a nine-year streak of winning their first game following the All-Star break.
Left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes(notes) (5-7) allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings.
Bartolo Colon(notes) (6-5) lost consecutive starts for the first time this season, allowing eight runs, three earned, and six hits in 2-3 of an inning, his shortest start of the year. Colon walked two and struck out none.
Rangers 5, Mariners 0
SEATTLE (AP)—Derek Holland(notes) was perfect through five innings and finished with a five-hitter as Texas won its season-high eighth straight.
It was Holland’s fourth career complete game—all shutouts—his third this season and second straight. He went the route in his previous outing July 7, a 6-0 win against Oakland.
Holland (8-4), who matched his career high for wins, retired the first 15 batters until walking Franklin Gutierrez(notes) on a 3-2 pitch to open the sixth. He then lost his no-hitter when the next batter, Chone Figgins(notes) singled to right.
Mike Napoli(notes), Josh Hamilton(notes) and Nelson Cruz(notes) homered for Texas.
Jason Vargas(notes) (6-7) went six innings for Seattle, allowing five runs and a season-high 12 hits.
Indians 8, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE (AP)—Asdrubal Cabrera(notes) and Carlos Santana(notes) homered and Justin Masterson(notes) struck out eight in six innings as Cleveland extended Baltimore’s losing streak to eight games.
The victory moved the Indians into first place in the AL Central, percentage points ahead of idle Detroit. Cleveland lost three straight before the All-Star break to fall out of first for the first time since June 28.
Cabrera and Santana connected in a three-run first inning against Jeremy Guthrie(notes) (3-13). Cleveland is 4-0 against Baltimore this season, outscoring the Orioles 28-11.
Masterson (8-6) gave up four runs and eight hits while improving to 3-0 in his last three starts.
Nick Markakis(notes) drove in two runs for the Orioles, whose eight-game losing streak matches a season high. Baltimore is 1-13 since June 26.
Twins 8, Royals 4
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Trevor Plouffe(notes) hit a two-run homer and Delmon Young(notes) had three hits in his return to the lineup to lead Minnesota.
Francisco Liriano(notes) (6-7) gave up three runs—one earned—and seven hits with four strikeouts in seven innings and Joe Mauer(notes) had two hits and two RBIs for the Twins.
Melky Cabrera(notes) had two hits, an RBI and threw a runner out at home from center field for the Royals, who watched their bullpen let a close game get out of hand.
Right-hander Blake Wood(notes) walked three and hit another batter while being charged with four runs in the seventh inning in relief of Bruce Chen(notes) (5-3), who gave up four runs and nine hits with three walks in five innings.
Alexi Casilla(notes) and Tsuyoshi Nishioka(notes) both had two hits for the Twins, who have won seven of nine.
