Golf-Irish Open prize fund halved

LONDON, June 30 (Reuters) - Newly-crowned U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy will be playing for much reduced prize money at next month’s Irish Open.

The European Tour announced on Thursday that the 2.6 million pounds ($4,15) prize fund would be cut by around half to 1.35m pounds due to lack of a main sponsor for the event in Killarney from July 28-31.
Telecommunications company ‘3’ withdrew their sponsorship in November.
Northern Irishman McIlroy and fellow major winners Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington will feature in the Killarney tournament.
