France beats Canada 4-0 at women’s World Cup

BOCHUM, Germany (AP)—Gaetane Thiney scored twice for France in a 4-0 win over Canada on Thursday that all but secured the French a spot in the quarterfinals and left their opponents on the brink of an early exit.

Thiney scored in the 24th and 59th minutes, and Camille Abily’s header from a corner put the game beyond doubt in the 66th.
Substitute Elodie Thomis added the fourth in the 83rd, when she rounded the goalkeeper after French playmaker Louisa Necib sent her through.
Canada captain Claire Sinclair, who wore a protective mask after breaking her nose in the previous loss to Germany, was unable to exert her influence on the game.
Germany was to play Nigeria in Group A’s late game, where a win for the host would leave it level on points with France, with Canada out.
