Report: Bayern offers Neuer a four-year contract

Bundesliga record champions Bayern Munich are to offer Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer a four-year contract, a newspaper report said on Tuesday.Bild reported that Neuer, who still has a contract with Schalke until the end of next season, has been offered a contract starting on July 1 this
year and Schalke is to receive a transfer fee of around 20 million euros (28.6 million dollars).

Final negotiations about the transfer are to start this month.

Bayern officials are, however, still not confirming negotiations with the player.

Bayern sporting director Christian Nerlinger said late Monday: "I have seen Manuel Neuer play in a white jersey and I have seen him in a blue jersey. I have also seen him in a red jersey and that was by far the best."

Bayern Munich play in red.

Bayern Munich players would like Neuer to join the club. "You do not have to characterize Manu. We all know that he is the best," Germany striker Mario Gomez said.

Joerg Butt, who regained his number one status as Bayern goalkeeper under new coach Andries Jonker ahead of last weekend's 5-1 victory against Bayer Leverkusen, said that there would be no conflict between him and Neuer.

"If Neuer comes, he will quite clearly be the first choice goalkeeper," the 36-year-old Butt said.

Rumours about a possible move were strengthened on Monday by Nerlinger who said that there was a clear tendency, while Neuer said on the weekend that he had taken a decision and informed those that needed to know.

Schalke manager Horst Heldt said that they had not yet received an official request from Bayern. "We will not prolong the decision unnecessarily, but now is not the right moment," he is quoted in Monday's Kicker magazine.

It seems unlikely that the transfer will be announced before Bayern face Schalke in Munich on April 30. Neuer was booed by Bayern fans when he played a German cup semi-final in Munich earlier this year.
