BERLIN (AFP) - With his side battling to avoid relegation this Saturday, VfL Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath has said the first-team squad will be held to their contracts if they fail to avoid the drop.
The 2009 German champions are just one place above relegation and level on 35 points with Eintracht Frankfurt, who are in the drop zone, with the Bundesliga season to end on Saturday.
Wolfsburg are at mid-table Hoffenheim on Saturday while Frankfurt are at champions Borussia Dortmund who will receive the Bundesliga shield on Saturday after the final whistle.
While Frankfurt must spoil Dortmund's party to stay up, Wolfsburg boss Felix Magath has said the club will hold their players to their contracts in the second division should they be relegated.
"The players who cooked us up this soup will be given a spoon and told to drink it," Magath told German agency SID, an AFP subsidiary.
"In the event of relegation to the second division, all our professionals will be expected to report for training when pre-season starts."
Wolfsburg's top players like Swiss goalkeper Diego Benaglio, Germany defender Arne Friedrich and Brazil midfielder Diego could all find themselves in the second division next season.
Magath revealed that in a meeting on Monday night, the club's advisory board voted to maintain the first-team's budget for next season in the event of relegation.
Only one player does not have a contract which covers him for the second division, but Magath said he is not in his first-choice line up.
Having taken over in March after ex-England manager Steve McClaren was sacked, Magath, who has won the Bundesliga title with both Wolfsburg and with Bayern Munich, has never coached a team to relegation.
"The drop would be a disaster for me personally, if I couldn't again solve this situation after so many years of successfully winning relegation battles," he said.
