PARIS, May 12 (Reuters) - Defending champion Michael Rogers has been ruled out of this month's Tour of California through illness, Team Sky said.
"Michael Rogers is hugely disappointed that illness has robbed him of the chance to defend his Tour of California title, but (he) is hoping to make a return to action at Bayern-Rundfahrt later this month," Sky said in a statement.
"The Australian has not raced since completing the Vuelta al Pais Vasco at the start of April and has been laid low with a bout of glandular fever in the time since then."
Rogers, a three-times time trial world champion from 2003-05, joined Team Sky from HTC-Columbia to strengthen the British team on the stage races.
The Tour of California starts on Sunday.
