Pakistan draw series; beat Windies by 196 runs

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (AP)—Pakistan romped to a series-leveling victory against West Indies in the second cricket test 17 minutes before lunch on the final day at Warner Park on Tuesday.
West Indies, overnight 130-5 and chasing an improbable
target of 427, was bowled out for 230.
Offspinner Saeed Ajmal, later named man of the series for his 17 wickets over both tests, grabbed three wickets to help secure the win.
Ajmal finished with 3-79 while left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman added one more to his three on Monday to end with 4-65.
Pakistan, after losing the first test in Guyana by 40 runs, shared the two-match series 1-1.
The visitors’ skipper Misbah-ul-Haq pinpointed his team’s improved catching as one of the keys to the success.
“That was excellent. That was one thing where we were behind in the previous game,” Misbah said. “In this game, I think fielding was the main difference between the two teams.”
While the Pakistanis held on to some stunning catches, West Indies floored six crucial catches in Pakistan’s second innings.
West Indies captain Darren Sammy was disappointed his team could not turn the first test win into a first series win in more than two years.
“We see it as an opportunity lost. We had good momentum coming into this game,” Sammy said.
“Looking at the game, we just didn’t score enough runs in both innings. As a side, we won’t be happy with that. We as batsmen have some work to do.”
Sammy also bemoaned the fielding lapses that let Pakistan off the hook.
“We dropped some crucial catches as well and that cost us dearly in this game,” he added.
Misbah said his team’s positive attitude helped overcome the defeat in Guyana.
“One thing that is really good about my team, especially this bunch of guys, is they really have fighting spirit,” he said. “That helped us to get back in the game. Everybody just showed the character and that just got us back on track.”
Pakistan returns home from its seventh tour of West Indies yet to achieve a test series victory in the Caribbean.
The home team’s hopes were dealt a severe blow in the day’s third over when Brendan Nash fell to Ajmal.
The left-hander failed to add to his overnight 30, edging to slip where Taufeeq Umar collected his fifth catch of the match.
Sammy and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh fought back gamely in a stand of 36 before Rehman struck.
Baugh, after compiling 18 off 59 balls, was finally given out leg before by umpire Asoka de Silva after Pakistan sought the Decision Review System.
The lower order provided further resistance as Sammy, Kemar Roach and Ravi Rampaul played positively.
Sammy cracked six fours in 41 off 51 deliveries before he tried to on-drive Ajmal and chipped a catch to midwicket.
Rampaul swatted two fours and two sixes off Rehman to liven up a sprinkling of spectators.
But after scoring 20 off 22 balls he departed to a fine silly point catch from Umar Akmal off Ajmal.
There was a comical end to the match when Roach was found dawdling and run out by a direct hit from Wahab Riaz.
Roach made 12 off 37 balls.
